The Government of Pakistan is planning on allowing international passengers for the duty-free import of mobile phones under baggage rules to diminish the exploitation of the facility.
Various proposals have been taken under consideration for this purpose and will be presented before the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet. However, strict measures can only be taken by imposing the biometric verification system for mobile devices.
Authorities have failed to restrict the illegal import of mobile phones and now international travelers are directed to register their cell phones on their passport on a yearly basis with absolutely no tax. This Device Identification Registration and Blocking System initiative will surely reduce the smuggling of the devices to a great extent.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) revealed that smugglers have been using the leaked data of the passengers to register their devices.
