India to Turn Its Idle Railway Coaches to Quarantine Wards

India is planning on turning idle railway coaches into quarantine units for the patients diagnosed with coronavirus.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has requested the masses to stay indoors for three weeks in order to control the number of coronavirus cases in the country.

In a recent statement, state-owned Indian Railways said that a prototype of isolation has been formulated from a train coach. For the time, the country is ready to turn 10 railway coaches into quarantine wards.

India’s Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said in a recent tweet, “Railways will offer clean, sanitized & hygienic surroundings for the patients to comfortably recover.” However, the number of victims that will be facilitated per coach has not been decided yet.

As per the official data, India has so far reported 873 confirmed cases, including 19 deaths.

The lockdown measures in the country have affected the poor community including migrant laborers to a huge extent.  More than half of the migrants have returned to their home town during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The home minister said, “It was advising states to provide food and shelter to migrants at relief camps alongside highways.”
